Renewing the Evangelical Soul
The word “Evangelical” historically referred to followers of Jesus who believe in the authority of the Scriptures, who are shaped by the message of the cross, who recognize the need for personal conversion, and who are active in sharing the Gospel in word and deed. Unfortunately, in our current culture the term “Evangelical” is more often tied to a political identity than a theological reality. This shift has been detrimental to the unity and witness of Christ’s church. Therefore, in this year’s conference we are seeking to renew the soul of the word “evangelical” by refocusing on what is central.
Part 1 of the conference will be a refocusing on the Evangel and the practice of Gospel conversations. During two workshop sessions, we will learn from a couple NEDA pastors and lay leaders about a simple pathway to train followers of Jesus to share the message of Jesus. The goal is that there will be an increase in the number of Christians in NEDA churches actively engaging in Gospel conversations.
In Part 2 of the conference, author Jonathan Leeman will present principles from his book, How The Nations Rage, that will help us rethink the connection of faith and politics. The goal is that we, as evangelicals, will have a greater focus on living out true righteousness and justice through our local churches and a more effective engagement in the cultural square.
